End the filibuster rule in the United States Senate.

What's wrong with this picture? If there are 100 possible votes, which there are in the Senate (the Vice President breaks ties), then 51 votes should be enough to pass a bill. Not 60. The filibuster rule has long ago outlived its usefulness and it should be abolished.

The Senate is dysfunctional because of the filibuster rule which allows 41 Senators to stop a vote by the rest of the group. The majority of American people are being held hostage by the minority in the Senate, and it should stop.

Maybe I am missing something important about the history of the filibuster, but I doubt it. It has to be one of the most stupid rules in modern American politics, and it should be repealed without delay.

Some people have said that it could be repealed by a simple rule change vote - by a majority of votes, God forbid - at the beginning of the next term of the Senate, which will probably be in January.

From MSNBC.com on the issue of "Don't ask, don't tell" :

....

"Collins said that she was 'very disappointed' that Reid 'walked away from negotiations' and brought the bill up for a vote before an agreement on the process of the debate had been reached and the 60 votes needed to move forward were assured.

....

"Authorization bill for debate on the floor. The vote failed, 57-40."

That's 60 votes needed out of 100. In most other normal, intelligently operated political governing bodies, only a simple majority, 51 votes out of a possible 100, would be needed to pass a bill.

Yesterday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- a right-wing political group representing large corporations -- proposed what it's calling an economic recovery plan. Take a look:
  • Privatize Social Security
  • Cut taxes for the rich
  • Log the national forests
  • Expand offshore gas and oil drilling
  • Privatize highways and waterways

Look familiar? That's what the agenda of a Republican Congress looks like and the Chamber of Commerce plans to spend more than $50 million to make it a reality.

Only people-powered campaigns can compete against that sort of money -- they're the only thing that ever have.

The Chamber can run ads now through Election Day, but nothing is more effective than committed volunteers talking to their family, friends and neighbors -- and that's exactly why DFA is launching Dean Corps. We'll organize people on the ground to talk to voters and get out the vote.
